Keemo was born in after the Vietnam War. When Keemo first appears he is 21 years old; a young adult. Whatever the date, he and Laun did not see or talk to each other before he left. It was stated that Laun was pregnant with Keemo when the war ended and Jack did not know that before he left.
She thought that Jack abandoned her on purpose. He basically did abandon her on purpose. He may not have had any control over when the army removed him from Vietnam back to the US. But he was no broke popper. He could have purchased an airline ticket and gone back to Vietnam to find the love of his life.
